What is the purpose of the Student Council?

The purpose of the Student Council is to promote school pride, develop teamwork and leadership skills, and to develop pride and commitment to the local community.

Student Council members are the student body leaders of Shaftsbury Elementary School. With members representing each class, the Student Council is the voice of the students. They participate in and organize school activities, support the community through donations, and meet with their staff advisers.

Community service is a huge part of Student Council. Our members value and support their community with service events and projects. Check under 'Activities' for a list of service projects and fundraisers.

 

How do I become a Student Council member?

Classrooms in grades 4 through 6 hold elections for Student Council members. Interested students write speeches to encourage classmates why they are the best candidate for the job!. After the speeches, each class votes for two Student Council representatives.

 

What are the responsibilities of a Student Council member?

There are a few responsibilities that come with the honor of being a Student Council member. Those responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  1. Be a Role Model
    • be an example for the rest of the student body
  2. Show Respect to School Community
    • manners
  3. Be Responsible
    • attend Student Council meetings
    • do extra work when needed
    • may include other duties
  4. Give speeches
    • Student Council members visit each classroom to inform other students of the activities they are supporting

Failure to follow these guidelines will generate a review by the advisers for a course of action. As a Student Council member, the student is not only representing their class, but also their school as a whole.
